Reflections: ‘Back to School’
Although the Chapel services have been quieter, as is usual during the summer, it has been fantastic to welcome visitors and neighbours in August for Open Chapel. It was a great opportunity to let newcomers know what’s different about a Unitarian Chapel and to give them a chance to see inside our beautiful building. Our message of ‘open minds, loving hearts and helping hands’ struck a chord with many people and my thanks go to all the helpers who welcomed visitors, made the tea, baked cakes and scones, not to mention all the clearing up afterwards!
Now that September has arrived, our minds turn to fresh starts, new school terms and new classes. The old adage ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ doesn’t hold true when we hear of scientific research that suggests that learning new facts can improve the brain’s memory. The region of the brain which is responsible for long-term memory is activated by novelty, so we’re doing ourselves some good by learning something new. Our monthly Monday night programmes resume this month, so we hope you can join us for poetry, discussion, the Heart & Soul service, the book group or all four!
Beginning 26th September, I will also be leading a new Spiritual Development course called Life Spirit on Tuesday nights. Written by Rev David Usher, whose other book is ‘12 Steps to Spiritual Health’, this will be an opportunity to explore deep questions such as ‘What gives meaning to your life?’, ‘What’s the role of personal faith?’ and ideas around ‘facing death’ and ‘concepts of god’. I do hope you can come along to explore these fascinating questions with me through personal reflection – which could be writing, drawing, staring into the middle distance – and discussion in small non-confrontational groups within a supportive atmosphere. To book your place, please contact me: firstname.lastname@example.org.
All our great events and programmes are open to all, and we thank our members for their continuing support. If you think you’ve found your ‘spiritual home’ at Rosslyn Hill Chapel, you might want to take the next step to becoming a member. Please contact me or Claire Julian who is part of the Membership Group to discuss this: email@example.com We look forward to welcoming new members at a special service in October!
